The Long Goodbye

Irony of ironies, I received a communique from the CA DMV in the mail this afternoon — after spending part of the morning at the West Hollywood branch explaining my car problem to a bored, yet, polite, hair-twirling clerk.

The envelope in my mailbox did not contain the long awaited title. Laughably, it contained a DMV Renewal application for the Saturn, and an attached mandate for Smog Certification.

Sacramento, you fox.

What pleasure it will give me to ignore this application, tear  it up and throw it in the trash.

What a thrill to know that I will never have to register another automobile in The Golden State.

Tomorrow at noon, a tow truck driver called Donny will pay me $100 to haul the Saturn away forever.

Sometimes, you just have to throw your hands in the air and give up.

Post DMV, I made one final trip to Box City. While there, I picked up a copy of their latest newsletter — dated January 2009 — and gleaned from it the following advice penned by the Bard of Cardboard, who, wisely, has chosen to remain anonymous:

One day soon as the sun begins to shine / Things will improve – both yours and mine / And an era will close as a new one begins / And the flow of karma will raise our chins.

The flow of karma will raise our chins. Wow.

That said, I don’t think I have it in me to utter one more goodbye. It’s getting kind of sad. So, instead, why don’t I just say hasta luego — until we meet again — because we will.

And when you have the time, please continue to visit the blog — I’ll be posting news about our trip from the road…

Chin up!
